Looking after it

Let it cool between tyres rather than running it continuously, keep the storage bag with the adapters so nothing goes missing, and check the spare fuse is still in the bag.

Put air in a tyre without finding a garage.

A 12V tyre inflator with automatic shut off, a real time pressure screen, dual power supply and an LED light, supplied with adapters and a storage bag.

Tyres lose pressure slowly and constantly, and an underinflated tyre wears faster, uses more fuel and handles worse.

The reason most people drive on soft tyres is not carelessness. It is that checking them means a trip to a garage forecourt and a machine that may or may not work.

This does the job on your driveway. Set the pressure you want, connect it, and the automatic shut off stops it there rather than leaving you watching a gauge.

It runs from the car's 12V socket or its own battery, which means it also works on a bike, a wheelbarrow, a football or an airbed.

It is a 12 volt inflator rated at 80 dB. It is loud in use, and it tops tyres up rather than seating a fresh tyre on a rim.

Portable Air Compressor

Correct tyre pressure is the cheapest maintenance there is. It affects braking distance, grip in the wet, fuel consumption and how quickly the tyre wears out, and it costs nothing to get right.

Portable Air Compressor

The automatic shut off is the feature that makes the difference between a tool you use and one that stays in the boot. You dial in the pressure, walk away, and it stops. There is no standing over a gauge guessing.

Portable Air Compressor

The dual power supply is more useful than it sounds. From the 12V socket you have unlimited running time for four tyres. On its own battery you can inflate something nowhere near the car.

The kit covers the awkward jobs too. The inflation needle handles footballs, the tapered adapters cover airbeds and inflatable toys, and the valve extender reaches valves that sit awkwardly behind an alloy wheel.

Know its limits. This is a top up inflator: it puts air into a tyre already on a rim. It will not seat a tyre bead, and it is not a workshop compressor for air tools. At 80 dB it is loud, so it is not something to run at six in the morning outside a neighbour's window.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Getting tyre pressures right

4 min read Online Auto Company

Why pressure matters

An underinflated tyre flexes more in the sidewall, which builds heat, wears the shoulders of the tread and increases rolling resistance.

The practical results are a longer braking distance, worse grip in the wet, more fuel used and a tyre that needs replacing sooner. None of those announce themselves. The tyre just quietly gets worse.

Finding your correct pressures

The figures are on a sticker, usually in the driver's door shut, sometimes inside the fuel flap or in the glovebox.

Most cars list two sets: normal load and fully laden. Use the laden figures when the car is full of people and luggage, which is exactly when people forget.

The number on the tyre sidewall is the maximum the tyre can take, not the pressure your car wants.

Checking them properly

Check when the tyres are cold, meaning the car has been standing or has driven less than about two miles.

A warm tyre reads higher. If you check after a motorway run and set the pressure to the door sticker figure, the tyres will be under pressure once they cool.

Do all four, and do the spare. A flat spare is only discovered at the worst moment.

Using the inflator

Connect the compressor to the 12V socket with the engine running if you are doing all four tyres, so you are not draining the battery.

Screw the connector onto the valve squarely. A leaking connection makes the pump work hard and the reading wander.

Set your target pressure and let the automatic shut off do the work.

Let the unit rest between tyres. Small compressors get hot, and heat is what kills them.

What it will not do

It tops up a tyre that is on the rim and holding air. It will not seat a bead on a fresh tyre and it will not run air tools.

If a tyre has gone completely flat, look for the cause before you inflate it. Driving on a tyre that has been run flat can damage the sidewall even after it is reinflated.
