This reader plugs into the OBD2 port and pulls that code out, so you go into a conversation with the garage knowing what the car has recorded.

Every car built to the OBD2 standard keeps a log. When a sensor reads outside its expected range, the engine management system records a code and, if it matters, lights the dashboard.
A reader gets that code out. It does not diagnose the fault, and this is the part people misunderstand: a code points at a circuit or a system, not at the part that has failed. A code naming an oxygen sensor is as often a leak upstream of the sensor as the sensor itself.
The help button matters here. A code on its own is a number. A definition plus possible causes turns it into something you can act on or discuss sensibly with a mechanic.
Live data is what separates a reader from a code lookup. Watching sensor values move while the engine runs tells you whether something is out of range now, which stored codes cannot.
Clearing codes deserves a warning. Clearing turns the light off but does not fix anything, and it also resets the emissions readiness monitors. If you clear codes the day before an MOT, the car may fail on incomplete readiness even though nothing is wrong.

The OBD2 socket is a 16 pin connector, almost always within reach of the driver's seat. Look under the dashboard near the steering column, behind a flap in the fuse panel, or under an ashtray or coin tray.
Your handbook will say if it is somewhere unusual.
Which cars are covered
OBD2 became a requirement for petrol cars in the UK from 2001 and for diesels from 2004. Vehicles built before that may have a manufacturer specific system that a generic reader cannot talk to.
If the connector is a 16 pin trapezoid, a generic reader will normally connect.
Reading a code
Turn the ignition to the on position without starting the engine, unless the reader asks otherwise.
Plug the reader in. It draws its power from the port, so there is nothing else to connect.
Read the stored codes and write them down before you do anything else. Note pending codes too, because those are faults the system has seen once and is watching.
What a code actually means
A code identifies a circuit or a system that reported a reading outside its expected range. It does not name the failed component.
This is the most common mistake made with a code reader. A code that mentions a sensor very often means the sensor is reporting a real problem elsewhere, not that the sensor is faulty.
Use the help function to read the definition and the possible causes, then work from the cheapest and most likely cause first.
Live data
Stored codes tell you what happened. Live data tells you what is happening.
Watching coolant temperature, fuel trims and sensor voltages while the engine warms up will often show a problem that never sets a code at all.
Clearing codes, and when not to
Clearing a code turns the light off. It does not repair anything, and the light will come back if the fault is still there.
Clearing also resets the emissions readiness monitors. Those monitors need a period of mixed driving to complete again.
Do not clear codes shortly before an MOT. A car with incomplete readiness monitors can fail the emissions check even when the engine is healthy.
