About this product
For the luggage that will not go in the boot.
A waterproof rooftop cargo bag holding 0.42 cubic metres, 110.5 x 85 x 42.8 cm, weighing 3.1 kg.
Every family holiday reaches the same moment on the driveway, where the bags on the ground clearly exceed the space in the boot.
A roof bag adds 0.42 cubic metres, which is roughly another boot, and it takes the soft, bulky, light things that waste boot space: bedding, coats, tents and empty bags.
It is waterproof, which on a British motorway is the whole point. Bags on a roof get standing rain at 70 mph.
At 3.1 kg empty it folds down and goes in a cupboard afterwards, unlike a hard box that needs somewhere to live all year.
It needs roof bars or a roof rack to fit to. Check your car's maximum roof load before you pack it.
Roof storage solves a specific problem. It is not extra space for heavy things, it is space for bulky light things, and used that way it transforms what fits in the car.
Bedding, coats, towels, tents and sleeping bags take up enormous boot volume and weigh almost nothing. Move them to the roof and the boot suddenly holds the cases.
Being a soft bag rather than a hard box is a real trade. A bag packs flat, stores in a cupboard, and costs far less. A box is more secure and more aerodynamic. For two trips a year, the bag wins.
Waterproofing is not a luxury item on this list. Anything on a roof spends the journey in direct spray, and a leaking roof bag ruins the contents rather than dampening them.
Two numbers govern whether you can use it safely: your car's maximum roof load, which is in the handbook and includes the weight of the bars and the bag, and the load rating of the bars themselves. Neither is generous, and both are commonly exceeded.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.
If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Loading a roof bag safely

Check the roof load limit first
Your handbook gives a maximum roof load. It is often between 50 and 75 kg, and it includes the bars, the bag and everything in it.
Your roof bars have their own rating too. The lower of the two figures is your real limit.
Exceeding it affects handling and braking, and on a long motorway run it puts load into mounting points that were never designed for it.
Pack light things high
Put the heavy items in the car and the light bulky ones on the roof.
Weight high up raises the centre of gravity, which changes how the car behaves in a crosswind and in an emergency swerve. Bedding, coats, tents and empty bags belong up there. Tools, books and tinned food do not.
Pack it square and full
A roof bag holds its shape best when it is evenly packed and reasonably full.
Fill the corners so the bag does not flap. A half empty bag catches wind, makes noise and wears at the seams.
Keep the load flat rather than piled in the middle, and do not let anything hard press against the fabric from inside.
Strapping it down
Run the straps as the instructions specify and tighten them evenly. Check that no strap crosses a door opening in a way that stops a door closing properly.
Tuck or tie off loose strap ends. A strap end flapping at motorway speed will wear through paintwork and is loud enough to be miserable for the whole journey.
Stop and re-check
Pull over after the first twenty minutes and check the straps again. Loads settle and straps that were tight on the driveway are often slack by then.
Check again at each fuel stop on a long run.
Driving with a loaded roof
Expect more wind noise and higher fuel consumption. Both are normal.
Allow more room for braking, take roundabouts and slip roads more gently than usual, and be ready for crosswind on exposed bridges and open motorway.
Remember the extra height. Car parks, drive throughs and height barriers are the most common way a roof bag gets destroyed.
Waterproof car top carrier, a soft rooftop cargo bag measuring 110.5 x 85 x 42.8 cm with a capacity of 0.42 cubic metres, weighing 3.1 kg empty, in black. Fits to roof bars or a roof rack and is intended for bulky lightweight luggage such as bedding, coats, tents and empty bags, keeping heavy items in the car. The vehicle handbook's maximum roof load includes the bars, the bag and its contents, and the roof bars have their own separate rating; use the lower figure. Pack evenly and fill the corners so the bag does not flap, tie off loose strap ends, and re-check straps after the first twenty minutes and at fuel stops. Expect more wind noise, higher fuel use and greater vehicle height. Dry fully before folding away.
