Stop scraping the windscreen at seven in the morning.

A windscreen cover that keeps frost off in winter and the sun off in summer, so you get in and drive.

Scraping a windscreen is five minutes of cold work that you do while already late, and it happens on the mornings you can least afford it.

A cover sits over the glass overnight. Frost forms on the cover instead of the windscreen, and in the morning you lift it off and go.

The same cover does a second job in summer, keeping direct sun off the glass so the cabin is not unbearable when you get back to the car.

It is a cover for the outside of the glass. Fit it before the frost forms, not after, and take it off before you drive.

Car Windscreen Cover

Frost forms on a windscreen because the glass loses heat to a clear night sky and drops below the temperature of the air around it. Anything between the glass and the sky slows that down.

Car Windscreen Cover

That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a cover works better than a de-icer spray for a car that sits outside overnight. The spray deals with frost that has already formed. The cover stops it forming on the glass in the first place.

Car Windscreen Cover

In summer the cover does the reverse job. Direct sun through the windscreen is what heats a parked cabin most, so shading the glass takes the worst of it off the dashboard and the steering wheel.

Fit it on dry glass where you can. A cover laid over an already wet or icy windscreen can freeze to it, which is a slower start than scraping.

Take it off and stow it before you drive. It is not a driving accessory and it will obstruct your view.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frost, sun and windscreen covers

Why frost forms on glass

On a clear night, a windscreen radiates heat upwards to the sky and ends up colder than the air around it. Moisture in that air then freezes on contact.

This is why frost appears on car glass on mornings when the air temperature never quite reached zero, and why cars parked under a carport or a tree often escape it.

What a cover changes

A cover puts a barrier between the glass and the open sky. Frost forms on the cover rather than the windscreen.

In the morning you lift the cover off and take the frost with it. There is no scraping, no waiting for the blowers, and no de-icer running down into the wiper scuttle.

Fitting it well

Fit it before the frost arrives, ideally on dry glass in the evening.

Make sure it is held securely. A cover that lifts in the wind overnight has done nothing, and a wet cover left loose can freeze to the glass.

If the windscreen is already iced, clear it first. Laying a cover over ice traps it.

Summer use

The same cover shades the glass on hot days. Most of the heat in a parked cabin comes in through the windscreen, so covering it keeps the dashboard, the wheel and the seats far more usable.

Park facing away from the afternoon sun where you can, and crack the windows a few millimetres if it is safe to do so.

Before you drive

Take the cover off completely and stow it. Never drive with it folded up on the bonnet or partly over the glass.

Check your wipers are free before you switch them on. Wipers frozen to the glass will strip the blade or blow the wiper fuse.

Page summary

Car windscreen cover fitted externally over the windscreen, used year round: in winter frost forms on the cover instead of the glass so the screen does not need scraping, and in summer it shades the glass and keeps the parked cabin cooler. Frost forms on car glass because the windscreen radiates heat to a clear night sky and falls below air temperature; a cover interrupts that. Fit on dry glass before frost forms rather than over existing ice, secure it against wind, dry it before folding, and remove it fully before driving.
