"description_short": "An OBD2 code reader that reads and clears fault codes, checks emissions readiness, shows live data and retrieves the VIN.",
"description": "Where the port is\n\nThe OBD2 socket is a 16 pin connector, almost always within reach of the driver's seat. Look under the dashboard near the steering column, behind a flap in the fuse panel, or under an ashtray or coin tray.\n\nYour handbook will say if it is somewhere unusual.\n\nWhich cars are covered\n\nOBD2 became a requirement for petrol cars in the UK from 2001 and for diesels from 2004. Vehicles built before that may have a manufacturer specific system that a generic reader cannot talk to.\n\nIf the connector is a 16 pin trapezoid, a generic reader will normally connect.\n\nReading a code\n\nTurn the ignition to the on position without starting the engine, unless the reader asks otherwise.\n\nPlug the reader in. It draws its power from the port, so there is nothing else to connect.\n\nRead the stored codes and write them down before you do anything else. Note pending codes too, because those are faults the system has seen once and is watching.\n\nWhat a code actually means\n\nA code identifies a circuit or a system that reported a reading outside its expected range. It does not name the failed component.\n\nThis is the most common mistake made with a code reader. A code that mentions a sensor very often means the sensor is reporting a real problem elsewhere, not that the sensor is faulty.\n\nUse the help function to read the definition and the possible causes, then work from the cheapest and most likely cause first.\n\nLive data\n\nStored codes tell you what happened. Live data tells you what is happening.\n\nWatching coolant temperature, fuel trims and sensor voltages while the engine warms up will often show a problem that never sets a code at all.\n\nClearing codes, and when not to\n\nClearing a code turns the light off. It does not repair anything, and the light will come back if the fault is still there.\n\nClearing also resets the emissions readiness monitors. Those monitors need a period of mixed driving to complete again.\n\nDo not clear codes shortly before an MOT. A car with incomplete readiness monitors can fail the emissions check even when the engine is healthy.",
"llm_summary": "Handheld OBD2 scanner and car code reader. Functions: read and clear diagnostic trouble codes, turn off the check engine light, one click emissions readiness key, on board monitoring test, live sensor data, VIN retrieval, and automatic code definitions with a help button listing possible causes. Supported OBD2 monitors include misfire, fuel system, comprehensive components, evaporative system, secondary air system and air conditioning refrigerant. Plugs into the vehicle's 16 pin OBD2 port and is powered by it. Applies to vehicles built to the OBD2 standard, in the UK petrol from 2001 and diesel from 2004. A fault code identifies a system or circuit reporting out of range, not the failed part. Clearing codes resets emissions readiness monitors, which can cause an MOT emissions failure if done shortly before a test.",
