Moisture in that air then freezes on contact.\n\nThis is why frost appears on car glass on mornings when the air temperature never quite reached zero, and why cars parked under a carport or a tree often escape it.\n\nWhat a cover changes\n\nA cover puts a barrier between the glass and the open sky. Frost forms on the cover rather than the windscreen.\n\nIn the morning you lift the cover off and take the frost with it. There is no scraping, no waiting for the blowers, and no de-icer running down into the wiper scuttle.\n\nFitting it well\n\nFit it before the frost arrives, ideally on dry glass in the evening.\n\nMake sure it is held securely. A cover that lifts in the wind overnight has done nothing, and a wet cover left loose can freeze to the glass.\n\nIf the windscreen is already iced, clear it first. Laying a cover over ice traps it.\n\nSummer use\n\nThe same cover shades the glass on hot days. Most of the heat in a parked cabin comes in through the windscreen, so covering it keeps the dashboard, the wheel and the seats far more usable.\n\nPark facing away from the afternoon sun where you can, and crack the windows a few millimetres if it is safe to do so.\n\nBefore you drive\n\nTake the cover off completely and stow it. Never drive with it folded up on the bonnet or partly over the glass.\n\nCheck your wipers are free before you switch them on. Wipers frozen to the glass will strip the blade or blow the wiper fuse.",
